Lomi makes garbage optional
In 3 easy steps
Did you know that food waste accounts for 24% of landfill materials in the US? It is considered the largest category of material found in municipal landfills. Sadly, 72% of Americans don’t compost their food waste.
Some of the reasons could be lack of information, lack of a municipal drop-off compost center, and not knowing there are countertop composters you can use at home.
1. Fill
Put all of your food scraps, coffee grounds, and even your old Pela case into Lomi.
2. Transform
Push the button and Lomi works its magic to breakdown your waste.
3. Reclaim
We tried the machine ourselves, and this review will talk about the Lomi’s features, how it works, its pros and cons, and whether or not you should buy it for your needs.
What is the Lomi Composter?
It comes with a stainless steel bucket that can accommodate 2 liters of food waste. Within hours, it can turn food scraps, kitchen trimmings, soft bone, leftover meat, bioplastics and packaging, and plant trimmings into usable compost.
You have to fill the bucket with food waste and choose from three different modes, and you get compost in just hours.
In my family’s case, we could fill the 2-liter bucket within 2 to 3 days. We put leftover food, scraps from cutting vegetables, small pieces of meat, chicken cartilage, and rotten veggies and fruits.
We have a small herb garden out in the yard, so we used the Grow Mode to make nutrient-rich soil and added it to our existing garden soil.

How to Use the Lomi Composter?
We were pretty surprised that there was no learning curve to using this machine. We filled the bucket within three days and turned on the Grow Mode. In 20 hours, we had a good amount of nutrient-rich soil to use in our garden.
The Lomi Composter is very easy to use, but you have to know that it’s pretty large. It will take up space on your countertop, so make sure you have room for it in your kitchen.
The machine has Eco Express Mode, Lomi Approved Mode, and Grow Mode.
Of course, we tried all modes.
If you want a quick way to make compost, use the Eco Express. It takes about 3 to 5 hours to produce dirt that you can throw into your green bin or a drop-off compost center. In this mode, you can only fill the bucket with actual food waste, so no meat, soft bone, or bioplastics.
If you want to break down food waste, bioplastics, and packaging, you must use the Lomi Approved mode. It takes about 5 to 8 hours to make compost from these materials. You can also add soft bone or leftover meat and bioplastics such as compostable straws, biodegradable cutlery, or paper.
Like the compost produced with Eco Express, you can bring the soil-like dirt to a drop-off compost center or into your green bin. The Lomi Composter is relevant despite still having to get your compost to a green bin or drop-off center because most of these compost facilities only accept food waste. But with the Lomi Composter, you can add other biodegradable materials to create a lightweight and versatile soil.
And lastly, if you want to make nutrient-rich soil you can use in your garden or as a natural fertilizer, use the Grow Mode. The Lomi Composter comes with 45 LomiPods, which are tablets that include a proprietary blend of probiotics, which help improve the soil output and enhance the speed of degradation of your food waste.
We’ve been using this Mode because, as I said, we have our herb garden at home, and we’ve always wanted to use homemade fertilizer on our plants. So far, we’ve only used up about 10 of the LomiPods, but as soon as we run out, we’ll be ordering more. We haven’t bought any fertilizers since having the Lomi at home.

Should You Buy the Lomi Composter?
If you are an apartment dweller and don’t have a nearby drop-off compost center or want to make your organic matter compost at home, you need to buy the Lomi Composter.
This is great for gardeners, eco-conscious individuals, and anyone who doesn’t want their food waste to go into a landfill.
Pros and Cons of Lomi
Pros
- Easy to Use
- Works Fast
- Keeps Food Waste Smell at Bay
- Makes Plant Food
- Composting Indoors Made Possible
The stainless steel bucket of the Lomi Composter features carbon filters. One of the things these filters do is to reduce the smell of your food waste, despite sitting there for 2 to 3 days before you degrade it.
One of the many reasons we used to throw food waste immediately was the awful smell of rotting food. With the Lomi, you won’t smell anything except when you open the lid. The carbon filters reduce odor from the bucket, remove gas (methane) emitted by food waste, and help degrade the waste fast. We also noticed no fruit flies around the Lomi machine or anywhere else in our kitchen.
We love that the machine is easy to use, the size is just right like other household appliances, and even our kids can operate the device independently. We can’t imagine not having it at home. It goes directly into the Lomi bucket whenever they have leftover food on their plate.
Cons
- Expensive
- Big and Heavy
- Needs to Have Carbon Filters Replaced
- Need to Buy LomiPods
One of the disadvantages of the Lomi machine is that it’s expensive. It costs 499 USD, and this is pricey for the average household. I read that the device was launched through a Kickstarter campaign, so hopefully, more investors will come into play to make it more accessible and affordable in the near future.
We also found out that we have to replace the activated carbon filters every few months to keep them in top shape. The machine is already pricey, and to keep on buying these filters and the added LomiPods are added expenses. But, I guess it’s a price to pay for helping the environment and for using nutrient-rich compost in our garden.
The Bottom Line
Though it’s expensive, big, and heavy, we believe the Lomi machine is worth every penny and every countertop space in our kitchen.
If you want to make your organic fertilizer at home in a few hours, we suggest getting yourself the Lomi Composter today. We promise you that making your compost from food waste you would’ve thrown out is an efficient and satisfying way to reduce your carbon footprint.
