can you freeze pizza dough

Sure, the internet is great. It helps us do things we could never do before, and we don’t really understand how it does that. Yes, planes are amazing. They let us travel across the globe as if we were birds. Of course, Penicillin is awesome. After all, it saves a lot of lives. But, let’s face it — none of these are the best human invention of all time. None of them come even close to pizza!

Show us someone who doesn’t love pizza, and we’ll show you a liar. And when you get past how amazing it tastes, you’ll love pizza for its convenience. When you get a hold of a pizza dough recipe, you’ll see how easy they are to make.

You can make tens of pizzas in a jiffy, and if you get overexcited, you can overdo it. So what to do with the leftover dough? Well, pizzas, the greatest invention of all time, have a solution for that as well: just freeze the dough!

How to Freeze Pizza Dough

Let’s say, for instance, you’re planning a party, and you don’t want to order pizza, but you want to make your own.

Obviously, you can’t spend your party in a kitchen making the dough. Instead, you can do it in advance. You can make your pizza dough ahead and freeze it for the occasion.

Once you’ve made the dough following your favorite recipes, you should separate them into individual balls. Each ball of dough should be the size of one pizza. Then, take pizza dough balls and lightly coat them with olive oil on all sides.

After that, all you need is a freezer bag that you can seal shut so that air doesn’t come and go as it pleases. Place the freezer bag in the freezer, and voila! — you’ve frozen your dough!

As you can see, it’s a pretty straightforward process. You don’t have to use any plastic wrap, baking sheet, or anything like that. Just don’t forget the oil part!

Taking the Dough out

The dough can be frozen for up to three months and not lose its flavor. Just make sure you take it out early (let the dough thaw in the refrigerator overnight). Bear in mind that the pizza dough will rise after being frozen.

If you don’t have the 8 hours needed for the frozen pizza dough to thaw, don’t worry. You can speed the process up. At room temperature, it takes around two hours to get that second rise. If you have only 30 minutes or so, you can place it in an airtight bag and put it in warm water.

However, bear in mind that we’re talking about a second rise here. It’s not as potent as the initial one that happens during the baking process. It will make your dough bigger, but it won’t double in size. You still need to make sure the dough rises. So, freeze your dough only after it’s gone through the first rise, not before.

Once your dough is ready to use, you get to make pizza. Our advice is to use the Ooni Pizza Oven to do it. The oven lets you make pizza as if you were an Italian chef without any fuss. You can use the oven to preheat pizzas as well, so it’s a super handy appliance everyone needs to have!

Summary

Pizzas are as amazing to eat as they are to make. They are popular due to their simplicity and convenience. If you want to make your own pizza at home, you can do so by making your own dough, which is super simple. And, if you have something planned ahead, or if you have some leftover dough, you have nothing to worry about! Just simply freeze the dough for later use.

As you’ve seen above, the process takes just two steps. Once you’re ready to use the dough again, just take it out and let it return to its normal state. Then, all you have to do is put some toppings on and place the pizza in the oven. And remember: specialized ovens, such as the Ooni Pizza Oven, will be your biggest help!
